Summary: The second volume covers the history of undivided Bengal from the thirteenth century till 1757. It contains 26 chapters, which cover the Muslim period, and the polity, geography, and numismatic history of the region. This volume begins with the introduction of the history of Islamic rule in Bengal with the conquest of the region by Bakhtiyar Khalji. The first half discusses the political history under the Mamluks, Tughlaqs, Ilyas Shahis, Husain Shahis, and the Afghan rule under the Lodi and Sur dynasties. The larger part deals with the Mughal conquest of Bengal from Akbar and Jahangir's reign till the decline and the emergence of Nawabi rule under Murshid Quli Khan. The book ends with the history of the Marathas, the entry of the Portuguese, and the decline of Muslim Bengal with the defeat of Siraj-ud-Daula in the infamous battle of Plassey in 1757 and the advent of the English East India Company's rule in Bengal.
